Aphex Twin face mapping at LED
WARNING: THE ABOVE LINK CONTAINS LOUD REPEPTITIVE ELECTRONIC MUSIC!
At last weekend's London Electronic Festival (LED) Aphex Twin used live facial recognition to map the audience and overlay images of his own, trademark distorted face.
Disturbing and fascinating in equal measure.

The Internet Of Things - Explained By Children
Recent years have seen increasing chatter about "The Internet Of Things", the widely-agreed next phase in the development of the internet. However, most normal people, with - y'know - lives and stuff, hear that phrase and usually respond with a resounding "huh?". Wikipedia's not much help -
"In computing, the term Internet of Things (also known as the Internet of Objects) refers to the networked interconnection of everyday objects. It is generally viewed as a self-configuring wireless network of sensors whose purpose would be to interconnect all things"Thanks, Wikipedia.
So, for the rest of the normal world, the nice people over at Latitude went and asked a bunch of children what they thought the future of the internet should look like, and put the results into a quick and easy-to-read video (above). As tends to be the way when you ask kids things, there are some daft ideas, but overall, it paints an easy-to-understand picture of what sort of things the internet - and other household objects - will be capable of ten years from now.
You can also grab a pdf summary of the results here

YouTube PLAY in association with the Guggenheim Museum
On the face of it this is not the most obvious collaboration but we really like the collaboration and creativity on display at YouTube Play.
"YouTube Play is a collaboration between YouTube and the Guggenheim Museum to unearth and showcase the very best creative video from around the world. To have your work considered, simply post it on YouTube, and then submit it at youtube.com/play. A jury of experts will decide which works presented at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York on October 21, 2010 with simultaneous presentations at the Guggenheim museums in Berlin, Bilbao, and Venice. The videos will be on view to the public from October 22 through 24 in New York and on the YouTube Play channel. Submissions close July 31, 2010."

Vuvuzelas - The Downfall of the World Cup?
This little piece was put together by a friend of ours on his Mac Book during the dull bits ( admittedly there were a few) of the Brazil Vs. N.Korea game a couple of nights ago. In the first day he got 20,000 views. Yesterday, it was recommended by Stephen Fry on Twitter and he's up to 250,000. There's already a copycat version.
Reminds us of this quote from Nicholas Carr: "What's happening isn't about amateurs and professionals. George Washington was an amateur politician. Charles Darwin was an amateur scientist. The decisive factor is not how we produce intellectual works but how we consume them".
Production Cost = 0. Media Cost = 0. Being sued by the makers of 'Downfall'- Endless.

Thomson Reuters Insider - Youtube for the Financial Industry
Thomson Reuters is launching what it calls ‘YouTube for the financial industry'. The Insider platform will aggregate videos produced by banks and asset managers and other financial services companies and also includes Thomson Reuters' own video content produced using its network of journalists, and financial analysts recently hired to provide specialist commentary.
One hundred and fifty external video providers, including Deutsche Bank, JPMorgan, and UBS have already signed up to Insider, which Thomson Reuters hopes will differentiate itself from its competitors such as Bloomberg.
This service is not open to the public, just the 500,000 financial professionals around the globe who subscribe to the Thomson Reuters desktop service. Some subscribers pay up to $2,000 per month. But is a major step in getting content in front of key decision makers (via desktop,iPhone, Blackberry and in a couple of weeks will also be available on the iPad) who watch developments in technology and media closely.

Augemented Reality for real
We've talked about Augmented Reality applications before on this blog but mostly in a "look what might happen some day" or a "look at those crazy Japanese" kind of way.
E-consultancy has just release a top 10 real life AR examples being implemented by real world Superbrands.
It's worth a look to see how science fiction is fast becoming science fact.

Nike - Write the Future
Those of you not on Twitter regularly (and let's face it, that's probably quite a large proportion) may not have noticed that the above Nike ad has been getting quite a lot of "bird of mouth" (and, no, we didn't just make that phrase up).
It's been teased over the last few weeks and is due to break during tomorrow's Champion's League Final.
Whatever you think of it personally, 700K views in 4 days with a 99% "like" rating is pretty impressive.

Online Video Viewing up 37%
Last month's Comscore report shows a 37% year on year increase in online video viewing with more than 5.5 billion streams viewed for the month of February.
Other highlights:
Facebook was the fastest growing video property in the top 10 with a 205% year on year increase to 43 Million views.
BBC more than doubled its videos viewed last year to come in second place. Each visitor to the broadcaster's site consumes 15.7 videos a month.
The younger Channel 4 audience views about 19 videos a month with women visiting Channel 4's site watching about five more videos per month than males.
Interest in user-genenrated and portal-based video at YouTube is peaking while traffic to longer-form TV-branded video is increasing.

YouTory - Moderation in all things?
Whatever your politics, you may have noticed the Conservative Party takeover on Youtube today and the channel it links to. Whatever the outcome of the election today, it looks as if the Conservatives have won the battle for digital supremacy.
Is this Youtube activity too little too late or a just in time intervention for Cameron's party? Either way, it highlights an interesting issue in social media implementation. It's politics, so do you allow 'the people' to stimulate and manage their own debate/conversations? Or, do you (social moderator) actually get involved with the conversation to influence / inform etc ?
There's very little evidence of the latter on the channel, with some very negative comments being posted beneath the manifesto which is either a position of confidence or, perhaps more likely, everyone at Tory HQ is too busy on doorsteps and outside polling stations to spend time canvassing the online audience.

Yahoo Secures Online Premiership Rights
Yahoo have secured exclusive UK online rights to the Premiership for the next three season. The deal will put five-minute highlight packages of every match on Yahoo.co.uk.
Highlights will be available from midnight on Sunday after weekend matches and at midnight the same day for midweek fixtures. Yahoo! will also own the rights in the UK to syndicate all or part of the Premier League highlights content to third parties, allowing Yahoo! to put together advertising packages for major brands. We imagine online betting companies will be all over this opportunity to access premium video content.
Richard Scudamore, chief executive of the Premier League, said: "The way fans access Barclays Premier League action is growing ever more diverse and sophisticated. The online highlights package is an important medium for supporters of all our clubs to be able to follow match action."
This is a bit of a surprise as most were expecting Sky to re-secure the rights after it was widely felt that Virgin failed to suitably promote (or sell) their EPL assets so it will be interesting to see if Yahoo! can do a better job.. Either way, it launches Yahoo! firmly back into the video market from a fairly low current position.

Crowdsourced Music Video
Eclectic Dutch genre-hopping band C-Mon & Kypski are creating a crowd-sourced music video for their latest release "More is Less". For your chance to be part of it visit http://oneframeoffame.com/ where you'll be given a frame of video to copy via webcam. The uploaded pictures are then stitched together to give a montage effect. A far cry from those cinematic 80's & 90's music video productions we all grew up with but a great way for a small band to make a big splash.
For more video from the band, see their Youtube channel.
