New "social" Spotify vs. ad-funded We7

If you haven't downloaded the latest version of Spotify it's worth taking a new look. First of all, it will add all of the songs on your PC to Spotify so that you can access them wherever you log in - either desktop or mobile.

It will also wirelessly sync your PC tracks to your mobile. Not only this, but you can share playlists to Twitter or Facebook and see all your Facebook friends playlists. Your friends can also send/recommend you music, basically stealing a bit of mflows thunder.

iTunes may finally have a decent rival as you can of course buy music through Spotify and access it on a huge variety of devices, not just the iPhone and Android.

More details on the new features over at Techcrunch.

Meanwhile, We7 scored a nice bit of PR recently that might just impact the hype around the launch of the latest version of Spotify.

"We7 has succeeded where many similar companies have failed: it has managed to get its advertising revenues to cover not only its own costs but, more importantly, the cost of the royalties it pays to the artists whose tracks it plays."

With We7 recently launching a paid subscription app for iPhone identical to Spotify's and both looking to break the US this year there could be exciting times ahead.

DEVO crowd-source their new look

Whip it!

Yes, DEVO appear to be croudsourcing a new look. In a letter on their website, Greg Scholl announced that they "have initiated a series of studies to help the band determine every decision it makes regarding its body covering, its brand color, its graphic icons and even its choice of vocal style and instrumentation on any given song!" in advance of their first album launch in 20 years this spring.

The campaign is being led by Mother LA for whom the band appear to be the only client. The agency told Creativity Online: "The office is very small and experimental in nature, a collaborative experiment," [Mother co-founder Linus] Karlsson says. "We're testing a new model, a soup-to-nuts virtual office environment, where people share ideas and unite digitally. Los Angeles seemed to be the perfect location to do this; not only is it hard city to commute in, and where both the band and Warner Bros are located, it is also a town where it's sometimes hard to tell what's real and what's fake, what's fact and what's fiction. And this is part of the project."

Crowdsourced Music Video

Eclectic Dutch genre-hopping band C-Mon & Kypski are creating a crowd-sourced music video for their latest release "More is Less". For your chance to be part of it visit http://oneframeoffame.com/ where you'll be given a frame of video to copy via webcam. The uploaded pictures are then stitched together to give a montage effect. A far cry from those cinematic 80's & 90's music video productions we all grew up with but a great way for a small band to make a big splash.

For more video from the band, see their Youtube channel.

Gillette Rock Documentaries

In a nice change from the old-school tour sponsorship, Gillette Uncut will launch a series of Rock documentaries at the end of the month featuring the likes of the Black Eyed Peas and Blink 182.

“Music plays a big part in the lives of young men,” says Steve Fund, Gillette global marketing director. “Gillette UNCUT shows a side of artists that’s rarely, if ever, seen – going backstage to show how they prepare, including styling and grooming, and the moments of doubt they experience before taking the stage.”
